Abruzzo's Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia
A borgo is typically a medieval village, hill town or centro storico (historic centre). Abruzzo's Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia are all listed below and number 23 at last count. Borghi Più Belli d'Italia roughly translates as "Italy's most beautiful villages" and in total, there are around 300 in Italy.
I've personally visited each of the borghi below and ordered them more or less with my favourites at the top. The hill town of Pacentro sits at the top of a hill by the Majella National Park and affords spectacular views whether it's winter or summer. Scanno is another year-round destination with a beautiful lake close by and the expansive Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park on its doorstep.
The hill town of Castel del Monte is not to be confused with the famous castle in Puglia while nearby Santo Stefano di Sessanio recently earned fame by becoming an "Albergo Diffuso", a type of village hotel where you can stay and enjoy the historical environment in typical homes of the region, restored to the needs of the modern guest.
